Mystique (Raven Darkhölme) is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics, often in association with the X-Men. She was created by artist David Cockrum and writer Chris Claremont and first appeared in the comic book Ms. Marvel #16 (April 1978).

She belongs to a subspecies of humanity known as mutants and was born with superhuman abilities. She is a shapeshifter who can mimic any person’s appearance and voice with pinpoint precision. Her natural appearance includes blue skin, red hair, and yellow eyes. Typically portrayed as an enemy of the X-Men, Mystique has been both a supervillain and antihero. She founded her own Brotherhood of Mutants and assassinated several important people involved in mutant affairs. Her age is said to be over 100 years. Mystique is the mother of X-Men hero Nightcrawler and villain Graydon Creed, as well as the adoptive mother of X-Men heroine Rogue. Since her debut, Mystique has been considered one of Marvel’s most notable and powerful female antiheroes.

Mystique appears in seven of 20th Century Fox’s X-Men films: the character was portrayed by Rebecca Romijn in X-Men (2000), X-2 (2003), and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), while Jennifer Lawrence portrayed a younger version in X-Men: First Class (2011), X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), and Dark Phoenix (2019).
