Good news!!! Caitlin Clark has just been honored as the most outstanding rookie in WNBA history.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark was named the WNBA’s Rookie of the Month for May, the league announced Monday, her first award since entering the professional ranks.

Although the Fever went 1-8 in May, Clark led all rookies with 17.6 points and 6.6 assists, while also hauling in 5.1 rebounds per game. Clark also tied for first in 3-pointers made among all WNBA players, finished second in assists and tied for second in free throws made.

She previously became the third player in WNBA history, Candace Parker and Sabrina Ionescu being the other two, with 100 or more points, 30 or more rebounds and 30 or more assists in her first six career games.

Clark’s first month has also seen her go through plenty of growing pains, however. She is currently averaging 5.4 turnovers per game and has recorded five or more turnovers seven times. Clark’s WNBA debut — a 21-point loss to the Connecticut Sun — saw her record 10 turnovers, a WNBA record for a player in her first game.

Having been hounded by some of the league’s best defenders, Clark is shooting only 35.7 percent from the field and 29.7 percent from 3-point range.

Multiple times this season, Clark has discussed the importance of giving herself grace. “I know the outside world thinks I’m gonna do some amazing things, but that might take some time,” she said during her first week of action.

Indiana opened its season with 11 games in 20 days, becoming just the second team since 2007 to do so and playing nearly twice as many as the two-time defending champion Las Vegas Aces (six).

Fever coach Christie Sides said after her team’s 36-point loss Sunday to the New York Liberty that Indiana felt the effects of the intense stretch.

“These guys are not just physically exhausted, they’re mentally exhausted,” Sides said. “We talk a lot about it. Their mental health is really important, and they are really struggling right now. It’s just been a lot different than anything we’ve ever experienced.

“And I just appreciate the fact that they keep showing up. You’ve shown up and putting the work in to get better.”

Clark and the Fever return to the court Friday against the winless Washington Mystics. On Monday, they will then face off against the undefeated Sun.

Connecticut coach Stephanie White was named Coach of the Month for May, while Sun star forward Alyssa Thomas was named Eastern Conference Player of the Month after averaging 14.6 points, 9.0 rebounds and 8.7 assists.

Aces star A’ja Wilson was named Western Conference Player of the Month, averaging 26.5 points, 12.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game.
