THE NORTHMAN – Official Trailer – Only In Theaters April 22

“The Northman” (2022) is a brutal and visually striking revenge epic directed by Robert Eggers. The film is set in the early 10th century and follows the story of Amleth, a young Viking prince portrayed by Alexander Skarsgård. The story begins with Amleth witnessing the brutal murder of his father, King Aurvandill, played by Ethan Hawke, at the hands of his uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang), who seizes the throne and takes Amleth’s mother, Queen Gudrún (Nicole Kidman), as his wife.

Fleeing his homeland, Amleth swears vengeance, repeating a mantra that becomes his life’s purpose: “I will avenge you, Father. I will save you, Mother. I will kill you, Fjölnir.” Years later, now a fierce and hulking warrior, Amleth learns of Fjölnir’s whereabouts in Iceland and disguises himself as a slave to infiltrate his uncle’s farm.

As he prepares to exact his revenge, Amleth encounters Olga, a Slavic slave played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who becomes his ally and love interest. Together, they plan to overthrow Fjölnir. The film crescendos in a fiery, primal battle between Amleth and Fjölnir, set against the backdrop of an erupting volcano. In the end, despite achieving his revenge, Amleth meets his fate, dying in battle but finding peace in knowing he has fulfilled his vow. The film is a visceral exploration of fate, destiny, and the cyclical nature of violence.
