Extraction 3 is taking longer than expected to arrive on Netflix, but the final result will be better for it, according to Chris Hemsworth.

“There’s been great collective collaboration between myself, Sam [Hargrave], the Russos, and Netflix in expanding that universe and bringing that courage to life,” the actor told Collider in July 2024.

“We just want to make sure we do it right and have a script that’s good enough to follow the previous two because I’m very proud of what we’ve done before, and hopefully, we can do it again.”

The third installment was originally confirmed by Netflix after Extraction 2 had one of the biggest opening weekends of 2023 on the streaming service.

Released on June 16, 2023, the action sequel surpassed The Mother as Netflix’s most-watched film on debut in 2023, with 88.4 million hours viewed.

Meanwhile, the first Extraction remains one of Netflix’s biggest films with 226.9 million hours viewed. Although the sequel couldn’t match those numbers, viewers are eager to see more of Tyler Rake’s adventures.

So yes, we will definitely have another dose of Chris Hemsworth, with director Sam Hargrave returning.

We already suspected that a third movie was on the way, as the end of Extraction 2 showed Idris Elba’s mysterious new character recruiting Tyler for another mission that is sure to be dangerous and which we’ll see unfold in the next film.

While we await that return, here’s everything you need to know about Extraction 3.

Although we now know that Extraction 3 is on its way to Netflix, we still don’t have a confirmed release date for the new movie.

Hargrave had already revealed on BroBible’s Post-Credit Podcast in May 2023 that a story was “in development” for a third movie, assuming the sequel was successful, which it turned out to be. “What exactly it is, I can’t say right now, but I think there’s another adventure in store for Tyler Rake,” he teased.

More than a year after that, the script still seems to be in development.

“We’re in the middle of writing, preparing, getting it ready. I don’t know when we’ll start, but it’s in progress,” Chris Hemsworth told Collider in May 2024.

There were three years between the first Extraction movie, released in April 2020, and the sequel Extraction 2, released on June 16, 2023, so we might be looking at a 2026 release if Netflix decides to follow the same pattern. Although we’d be happy to be proven wrong.

Spoilers for Extraction 2 ahead.

The announcement of the third movie confirmed that, of course, Chris Hemsworth will return as Tyler Rake.

We haven’t had any other casting announcements yet, but we would expect Golshifteh Farahani to return as Tyler’s partner, Nik Khan. However, she will be without her brother Yaz (played by Adam Bessa), who was killed off in the sequel.

Idris Elba’s mysterious character, credited as Alcott, will almost certainly return as well, as the ending hinted that he has a role to play in the future of the series.

Another character who might appear in future films is Mia, Tyler Rake’s ex-wife, played by Olga Kurylenko. However, even though Tyler helped save her sister, she still seemed reluctant to have anything to do with him.

There are still no details on what Extraction 3 will be about, but the path has been set thanks to the ending of Extraction 2.

The sequel follows Tyler Rake as he pulls off an impossible prison break to save his ex-wife’s sister and her two children, who are being held captive by Georgian mob boss Davit Radiani.

The extraction is successful, but Davit’s death enrages his brother Zurab, who will stop at nothing until he has killed Tyler. After a dramatic chase in Vienna, the mercenary faces off against the villain and kills him, but Austrian police raid the scene and arrest him and his partner Nik.

At the end of the movie, Idris Elba’s unnamed character returns to make them an offer: they will be freed from prison if they do a job for his boss. It remains to be seen who that boss might be or what kind of mission they are about to undertake.

Extraction 3 should reveal more about this new job—likely some very difficult extraction, in keeping with the saga’s title—that will challenge Rake’s skills as a soldier. It’s also a new opportunity to bring Rake and Nik closer together as we see if there is any romantic potential between them.

We also hope to learn more about Alcott’s mysterious boss and find out if he’s an ally or a new villain to deal with. Speaking to Collider, Hargrave said that while they know who the character is, they don’t yet know who will play him:

“You’ve just had two pretty wild movies with Tyler Rake. What’s going to raise the stakes, what challenges will there be? How do you elevate it? And by simply throwing out a line like, ‘He’s a first-rate bastard,’ you’re like: okay, that line says he’s someone who could be in the same league as Tyler Rake. Now I’m intrigued.”

He added: “Who will play him? I think that’s the beauty of that line. It’s like, now that one line can go out and attract a lot of great, surprising actors to play that wild character.”

Netflix

In November 2023, Scott Stuber, Netflix’s Head of Film, gave an exciting update on the script’s status. “You know, you have to find the right thing,” Stuber told Collider.

“I think the second one was so good because it was emotional and complex. It reminds me of when I worked on the Bourne movies. Tony Gilroy did a great job on the second one by making it emotional and activating that emotion around Franka’s [Potente] death,” he added.

“So, this one has the same kind of family background around Chris [Hemsworth]’s motivation. Getting Idris [Elba] into the franchise was an interesting way to evolve it.

“So we’re waiting on the script and working hard, but the aspiration would be great. I mean, what those guys have done has been really cool in that franchise.”

Extraction 3 hasn’t released any footage yet, so we’ll have to wait a bit until we can see a trailer. Patience!

Extraction and Extraction 2 are available to watch on Netflix.
